Citizenship: Empowering Young People through Municipal Youth Councils
May 5, 2025On Wednesday, 9 April, our Council participated in the “EGL Study Visit on Youth Participation in Thessaloniki”, which took place at the Holiday Inn hotel. The study visit on Youth Participation in Thessaloniki was organized within the framework of the Europe Goes Local program by the Youth and Lifelong Learning Foundation (INEDIVIM), the National Agency for the Erasmus+ Youth and Sport programme in Greece, together with the Foundation for the Development of the Education System and SALTO Eastern Europe and Caucasus.
During the sessions, participants had the opportunity to learn methods for analyzing the level of youth participation in their own municipalities, as well as ways in which they can contribute to strengthening youth engagement. As part of the presentations, the structure and operation of our Council were highlighted as a good practice, as a body that empowers and activates young people at a local level.
The Youth Council was represented by Stavros Papagiannis, Secretary of the Council. Also attending the meeting were Chrysa Klimatsouda, Head of the Directorate of Education, Youth, Lifelong Learning and Employment of the Municipality of Thermi, and Sofia Kyprianidou, youth worker.
Following the visit, municipalities from countries such as Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia, Moldova, and Poland gained new ideas and inspiration, aiming to strengthen youth participation structures in their local communities.
